How the Game is Played?
The format of the game is not that much complicated. The Teer game is played six days a week Monday to Saturday and Sunday is off. Till 3:00 pm you can bet on numbers after 3:00 pm the after that the actual game begins. The shooting goes for two minutes after the calculation process begins. Not just Meghalaya the people of neighboring states like Assam, and Tripura also play this unique betting game.
There are two rounds in this game: the first round and the second round. In the first round, 50 archers shoot with 30 arrows each, and in the second round, the same 50 shooters shoot with now 20 arrows each. First-round results are released at 4:00 pm and the second-round result comes at 5:00 pm. The timing changes with the seasons, summer and winter.
Introduction of Money in Shillong Teer
There is no proper data on when exactly the Teer game started in Shillong. In the very beginning, this game was the way to earn respect and showcase skills. Soon, the game evolved, and people started to bet on the skill set of archers. Not long after, this game became a source of gambling.
With time, people continued to invest money in this game as a gambling source, and it persisted for a couple of decades. Soon, the state government banned this game around the 1970s. The game’s influence was so strong that it continued illegally in certain parts of Meghalaya. In 1982, the new government legalized this game.
Another very popular theory regarding the origins of Teer as a betting game is the “Britishers Theory.” According to this theory, during the colonial period, the Britishers loved the state of Meghalaya because of its pleasant weather, particularly Shillong, which served as an escape from the heat of the plains. While in the hills of Meghalaya, they discovered this unique game of archery and were impressed. Many experts assert that they first introduced the betting system into Teer. Although there are various debates about this theory, nothing has emerged.
Story of the Evolution of Shillong Teer
When Shillong Teer started as a betting game, there was no confirmed data. But archery had been going on for a very long time and has great significance in the traditions and life of the Khasi tribe.
As time passed, the game also started to evolve; people began to bet their money on the skills of the archers. At that time, there were no rules or regulations; everything was very unorganized, and slowly it turned into a game of gambling.
Very soon, the government understood that if it carried on, it would affect the youth. Because the game was not organized at that time, there were multiple loopholes for fraud. After the ban, the problem didn’t get solved. The game kept going secretly, and now the government is also not able to do anything.
The government decided to fix the problems of Teer in Meghalaya. Under the Meghalaya Amusement and Betting Tax Act of 1982, the State government and the Chief Minister of Meghalaya officially regulated the game. At that time the CM of Meghalaya was Captain Williamson A. Sangma who held the political power while deciding to organise this game. The govt. first unbanned the game then made a specific legal body The Khasi Hills Archery Sports Association, and a group of 12 archery clubs to regulate the game.
Why Government Legalize Shillong Teer?
The biggest reason the govt. legalized the game because of the following reasons.
- The game was not properly organized.
- Money fraud started to grow up.
- Many agents and bookies used to say wrong results to make their percentages.
- There were no such proper rules.
- Mouth spread of results used to cause multiple mistakes.
To solve those issues and the illegal gameplay the government of Meghalaya decided to organise this game.
Shillong Teer is not just a form of betting game it is deeply rooted in the local culture of the Khasi people. By legalizing it, the government preserved a part of the region’s indigenous heritage while making it a structured and regulated form of entertainment.
