How Shillong Teer Stood on Its Feet?

The real date of the beginning of this game is not confirmed. The game of archery is no doubt very old. Archey holds a very significant role in the culture of the Khasi Tribe. Bow and arrows are used as one of the prime weapons of the tribal communities.

The evolved version of this game used to be a sport in the Khasi community. The game was a game of honor where archers demonstrated the art of archery and their skills with the bow and arrows. Soon government figured out that the way the game was going was not correct because there were not many rules and regulations, the game was not organized, and money fraud became a common thing. In 1982 the new government noticed the problem of illegal play of this game. To solve the problem the government passed an act the Meghalaya Amusement and Betting Tax Act of 1982, under this act Shillong Teer is still going on without any disruption. At that time CM of Meghalaya was Captain Williamson A. Sangma. Now a legal body Khasi Hills Archery Sports Institute (K.H.A.S.I) and some other clubs run the game. The legal affairs are under the Meghalaya Amusement and Betting Tax Act of 1982.
