Regulation of Shillong Teer Under the Meghalaya Amusement and Betting Tax Act of 1982
The State government of Meghalaya, under the leadership of Chief Minister Captain Williamson A. Sangma, officially regulated the Shillong Teer game through the Meghalaya Amusement and Betting Tax Act of 1982. This legislation, further clarified by the Meghalaya Amusement and Betting Tax (Amendment) Act, 1982, laid the legal foundation for governing Teer as a recognized form of betting.
At that time, Captain Sangma held the political authority to implement this law, with the backing of the state legislative body. As a result, the government granted legal status to Shillong Teer, distinguishing it from traditional forms of gambling.
Since then, Shillong Teer has operated under this legal framework, allowing the game to flourish while maintaining government oversight and public trust.

A popular theory suggests that during the colonial period, Shillong was the capital of Assam, and the British were drawn to the region due to its pleasant weather. It provided them a welcome escape from the heat of the plains.

How Does the Game Work?

The results of the first round are announced at 4:00 p.m., while the second round’s results are released at 5:00 p.m. These timings may vary depending on the season—summer and winter.
