What is Shillong Teer Game?

Shillong Teer is an archery game in which people bet their money to rewarded. The name “Teer” means arrows the game has a massive audience in Meghalaya and some neighboring states of Meghalaya. Nowadays, the internet and technology have made this game available to everyone and everywhere.

This game used to be a traditional game of the Khasi community to demonstrate their skill level with bows and arrows. Archery has a great connection with the Khasi tribes. It was one of the primary weapons in the past. This game used to be competitive and a field where you could earn your respect with your skills but with time, this game evolved, and people started to put money on the shooters’ skills.

How does the Shillong Teer Game Work?

The format of the game is not that complicated. The Teer game played six days a week, Monday through Saturday, and Sunday is off.

Till 3:00 pm you can bet on numbers after 3:00 pm the after that the actual game begins. The shooting goes for two minutes after the calculation process begins. There are more than 5,000 teer counters in Meghalaya, you can guess by the numbers how popular the game is in Meghalaya.

There are two rounds in this game: the first and the second. In the first round, 50 archers shoot with 30 arrows each, and in the second round, the same 50 shooters shoot with 20 arrows each. The first-round results released at 4:00 p.m., and the second-round results released at 5:00 p.m.

How does the betting system work?

In this game, there are 100 possible numbers, ranging from 0 to 99. This means there are 100 potential results in each round. Players choose numbers they believe might be successful and place their bets on those numbers. If the number they chose hits, they are rewarded with Rs 80 for every Rs 1 they invest.

Let’s understand with an example: Suppose, out of the 100 numbers, you select 57 and 12 as your target numbers and bet Rs 100 on each. When the result is announced, your prediction is correct, and the result is 12. Since you placed Rs 100 on number 12, you will now receive Rs 8,000 as a reward. This is because, as mentioned earlier, for every Rs 1 you bet, you win Rs 80. Therefore, your Rs 100 bet on 12 will earn you Rs 8,000.

How Shillong Teer's results are listed?

In both rounds, 50 archers shoot arrows at a specific target, with each archer using 30 arrows in the first round and 20 arrows in the second. The last two digits of the number of arrows hitting the target are considered the final result.

Here’s an example to explain: In the first round, 50 archers take aim at the target, each with 30 arrows, totaling 1,500 arrows. Let’s say 951 arrows hit the target. In this case, the final result will be 51, as the last two digits (51) are taken as the outcome.

Back Stories

The exact origin of Shillong Teer as a betting game remains unclear, but archery has long held great significance in the traditions and daily life of the Khasi tribe.

Initially, the game was a way for individuals to earn respect and showcase their skills. Over time, people began betting money on the archers’ abilities. This eventually transformed the game into a form of gambling.

In the 1970s, the state government banned the game, fearing it would negatively impact the youth. The game was unorganized, lacked proper rules and regulations, and was rife with money fraud.

However, in 1982, the new government of Meghalaya made a bold decision to lift the ban. Under the Meghalaya Amusement and Betting Tax Act of 1982, the government, led by Chief Minister Captain Williamson A. Sangma, decided to regulate the game. Recognizing that the game would continue regardless of a ban and could potentially evolve into unregulated gambling, the government legalized it and created a legal framework. The Khasi Hills Archery Sports Association was formed, along with a group of 12 archery clubs.

Colonial Period Theory

Another popular theory suggests that during the colonial period, Shillong was the capital of Assam, and the British were drawn to the cool weather of Meghalaya as an escape from the heat of the plains.

During this time, the British observed the traditional Khasi archery game and were impressed by it. It is believed that they introduced the lottery and betting system to the traditional sport, adapting it into a more organized form.

The game of teer is not a game that will guarantee you a confirmed success. So, be responsible and play.
